The Academy (est. 1981) is a performing arts school encompassing music, dance and theatre. With a student body of 700 and a faculty and staff of 28 it has established significant festivals for the students and community. See Events Calendar for details of annual concert series.

Free weekly piping and drumming lessons are offered at Oceanview Middle School (7105 Nootka Street above University) on Tuesday evenings to those aspiring to become members of The Clansman Pipe Band. Drumming lessons begin at 7:00 pm and piping lessons begin at 6:30 pm. The band supplies drums, but beginning students must purchase their own sticks and practice pad. Beginning piping students must purchase a practice chanter and tutor book. Students at all levels and of all ages are welcome. For information or to register call Ian Richmond.

A project of the Academy, SOAP was launched in 2004 with 88 players from 16 countries and a distinguished faculty from major orchestras in Europe and the Americas. The program takes place every two years with the next scheduled for 2008.

The purposes of the society is to promote all music in the community, but particularly jazz and blues. The Society sponsors an annual Vocal Summit with guest artists and local school participation. It also puts on music workshops and seminars
