The saying goes that music feeds the soul. In Powell River we have a lot of soul food. The Academy of Music puts on a variety of concerts through the winter. There are music festivals every year. And then there is the music played by local musicians at other annual events.
From its beginnings as a choral program for youth in 1974 “the Academy has grown to a performing arts school, encompassing music, dance, visual arts and theatre with a student body of over 800 and a faculty and staff of 34.”
Often called the ‘Festival of a 1,000 Voices’, the International Choral Kathaumixw Festival brings choirs from around the world to share their music and love of singing. Powell River has become known worldwide for its friendly musical atmosphere and setting.
Sponsored by the Powell River Rotary Club, the Festival has been a Powell River tradition for over 65 years offering opportunities to a wide range of performing artists including piano, voice, strings, wind and brass instruments, speech arts, and amateur choirs, bands, string and jazz ensembles.
The Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy, or PRISMA as it is more commonly known, is held every two years in June. It offers a unique program that prepares music students and young professionals for a career in music performance. The community is treated to several concerts throughout the period that includes a free concert at Willingdon Beach.
Held on Labour Day weekend since 1981 the Sunshine Music Festival is a celebration of live music from across Canada and the world. Expect to see world-class performances in a picturesque setting at Palm Beach Park on the waterfront with a craft market and food vendors.
