Powell River is located on the Upper Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, 140 kilometres northwest of Vancouver. The City of Powell River includes the neighbourhoods of Westview, Wildwood, Townsite (original paper mill town) and Cranberry.
Approximately 13,000 people live within the city boundaries with an additional 9,000 in the surrounding region. Powell River faces the Strait of Georgia to the west and south with Powell Lake extending to the north.
Two ferries are needed to reach Powell River from Vancouver, which provides a pleasant feeling of isolation. This is a region where mountains drop down to the sea, boats are a common form of transportation and residents enjoy the flavour of coastal BC living. Large marinas provide access to the Strait of Georgia and nearby Powell Lake.
Powell River began as a paper mill town in 1910 with the mill still providing substantial jobs. The logging industry remains one of the area’s primary employers. However, Powell River has become commercially and economically diversified with tourism, a major growth area in recent years.
