Hospital Auxiliary Economy Shop

7030 Alberni Street, Powell River V8A 2C3

604 485 0110

Every week, from 100 to 125 volunteers are at work to keep the Powell River Health Care Auxiliary Economy Shop's doors open. On a typical day 20 to 25 volunteers are in the store.

When bags of items come in, donated by the people of Powell River, they are put into an area called the pit before they are sorted. The shop keeps what is valuable. What is not valuable has to be hauled away.

The Economy Shop does not accept electrical appliances such as stoves, washers and driers. Ripped, stained or torn chesterfields or mattresses are also not welcome; nor clothes that are torn or very dirty. "We do have to pay to have them taken to the dump....it costs the group in excess of $800 a month to take non-valuable items to the garbage. She acknowledges that the shop could not operate without the contributions, so donations are always welcome.

The preferred time for dropoffs when the shop is open.

Proceeds are donated to health care in the community.

Read more about the Econo Shop (scroll down past the photos) on the Powell River Health Care Auxiliary website. Although not updated since 2007 the website has a lot of interesting information about this important group in our community.

Bill Grantham (Fire Hall) 604 485 4431  Email

Since its inception in 1954, Fire Fighters have been the backbone of Muscular Dystrophy Canada. As of 2007, Canadian Fire Fighters have raised over 61.3 million dollars in support of the tens of thousands of Canadians affected by neuromuscular disorders.

Powell River’s Professional Fire Fighters have been supporters of MDC since 1961, and every September we take part in a national boot drive in uniform on our off duty time. Through the generous support of the citizens of Powell River, we raised $6,700 in 2010, and since 1961 we have raised over $100,000 for this great cause. Thank you for your continued support, we couldn't do it without you.

“Gogo” is a Zulu word that means Grandmother. Since 2006 Grandmothers to Grandmothers’ Campaign Groups have been forming in every province of Canada. To date there are over 5,000 women in over 240 groups, each with the goal of reaching grandmothers in Africa and the orphans in their care with financial aid and reason to hope. Powell River joined the effort to raise awareness and funds to gogo’s by forming a group in 2009.
