Funded by donations and unions the Food Bank provides hampers filled with sugar, milk, tea, and non-perishables

Identification for each person, including children (Care Cards are acceptable ID), is required.

Volunteers welcome. Donation boxes at Safeway, Save-on Foods and Quality Foods.

Hours: 10-2 Tue to Thu - Sept to June;  July & Aug, 2 days per month; call to confirm. Closed for the week of cheque day

Good Food Box Program

The program runs entirely on volunteer labour with between 115-150 boxes prepared each month. It contains 10-11 types of fruits and vegetables and the $12 box is considered to be 20-40% higher value than buying items at market. The food is packaged at the United Church with dedicated volunteers. A local supermarket supplies the food at near cost. A newsletter accompanies the box containing nutritional information and recipes.

Pamphlets about the Good Food Box are available at PREP, BOND, Public Health, Tla’Amin Health and other sites. There is no membership or long-term commitment required. Not a charity; people pay for what goes into their boxes. There may be community donations and support, but is run by volunteers and is customer centred.

How to participate:

Prepay by the 3rd of the month at Town Centre Mall, across from the Overwaitea entrance inside the mall or at Family Place

Pick up or arrange for delivery what you purchased on the second Wednesday of each month

Cost per box is $12.00 with various pick-up sites including, Family Place (Town Centre Mall); deliveries for the disabled or those without transportation can be arranged

Meals on Wheels

Meals prepared and delivered to elderly and incapacitated persons within the City of Powell River on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Each meal costs $6.00

Food Bank Donations

About 600 to 800 people per month depend on the Powell River food bank for provisions, which includes about 250 families.

The rising price of food is another concern because it means that money donated does not go nearly as far as it used to.
