For a relatively small city Powell River has a good selection of private schools in addition to an excellent public school system for students from kindergarten to grade 12. There are two religion based schools, a French immersion school and an English as a Second Language school. Having Vancouver Island University (VIU) here is an added bonus for those starting a university education or who wish to improve their education with night courses. Last, but certainly not least, VIU hosts the Elder College, a program for seniors to continue learning.

Volunteers provide a variety of learning opportunities for people 50 years of age or over. While the courses provided through ElderCollege are open to those under 50 and non-members, for a small annual fee, members get reduced rates for courses.
Camber College has been providing students with high quality English language training since 2003. They provide students with home stay opportunities and recreational activities that serve to improve their English language skills.

A Francophone school for full-day kindergarten to grade 9 that operates entirely in French. Beginning French courses are offered regularly and intermediate courses as demand warrants. Other activities include extra-curricular sports, clubs and workshops for students and families
The Powell River School District serves a student population of approximately 2000 students in six elementary schools, one secondary school, an alternate school and a Distributed Learning program to support home-learning families called Partners in Education (PIE). It also includes a French Immersion program through James Thomson Elementary.
Vancouver Island University offers a diverse range of programs, from basic education to undergraduate and graduate degrees, along with numerous part-time continuing education courses and customized training for business and industry
The University, well known in international education and contract training for business and industry, also offers an MBA and International MBA together with the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom.
