T.A.N. was reincorporated October 31, 2007 with a mandate to maintain and strengthen the integrity of the environmental, social and economic fabric of the Texada Island Community. We are committed to informing Texada residents of events that may affect our environment and to make representation to others on behalf of the community. In order to carry out a series of projects and tasks in opposing the proposal by WestPac LNG Corporation, T.A.N. members have formed a number of committees including: Research - Communications - Publications - Government liaison - Networking –Fundraising. All participation is welcome and encouraged.

Anyone interested in the arts, culture or tourism on Texada Island is invited to become involved in TACT. Memberships start at $10.00 for individuals and $25.00 for businesses. A business membership includes brochure racking space at the visitors centre at Blubber Bay, a link on the TACT and one web page for those businesses that do not have one.

The boat club lies safe and secure ringed by steep treed bluffs and a mammoth rock breakwater. The dream of a viable community Boat Club started in the 60’s by forward thinking Islanders has become a reality through the dedicated hard work of club members, the generosity of local landowners and the quarries and especially through community support throughout its history.  Volunteer work parties are the backbone of the Club’s expansion, which now extends to over 500 feet of docks, including substantial transient moorage for the accommodation of visitor boats, all which generates income for the Club. Membership is open to residents who reside full time on Texada.

Van Anda, Gillies Bay and the surrounding areas are protected by two volunteer fire departments. The two groups routinely work together to defend us against the fires that break out on our island. Both departments are members of the Volunteer Fire Fighters' Association of British Columbia. The fire departments are responsible for issuing burning permits and also informing the public of fire bans during the fire season.  If you are interested in volunteering for either fire department or would like more information, please call either fire chief.

The Texada Island Heritage Society is a registered non-profit society able to give tax receipts for donations and apply for “grant” monies. Texada Museum buildings are now found in one of the last Townsite houses behind the Gallery in Blubber Bay and in the old elementary wing of the Texada School in Van Anda.  The museum keeps regular hours during the summer and will open for special occasions other times.

Meetings: every other month September to June at the Seniors Centre in Gillies Bay.

Yearly Membership: $10 for a single and $15 for a family.

The Texada Library is a volunteer-staffed community library that maintains a permanent collection of donated and purchased fiction, non-fiction and reference books, plus videos, CD’s, DVD’s and books-on-tape. Special collections include children's fiction and local history.

Any resident or visitor to Texada Island may borrow circulating Library materials. Free Internet access is provided at the Texada Library with the assistance of the Powell River Regional District.  Access is via satellite and includes Wi-Fi, which is available in the parking lot even if our Library is closed.

Hours: Mon 12:30-2:30; Tue 5-7; Wed 12–2; Thu 7–9; Fri 12-2; Sat 11–1;
Sunday 12 to 2 when Farmers Market is open

Texada Island Needlework Guild is a newly formed chapter of the Embroidery Association of Canada. Together we share our skills and learn new techniques in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and indulge guilt-free in the stitching we love to do.

Police-Based Victims Services provides direct support services to crime and trauma victims and witnesses. Some of the services provided are:  Crisis intervention support, emotional support and information about a victim's specific case, including police file and court file updates. Practical assistance is offered including safety planning, assistance in completing Victim Impact Statements and applications for the Crime Victim Assistance Program; orientation to the criminal justice system and witness preparation. There is accompaniment or the facilitation of accompaniment, to meetings with police, Crown Counsel or court.   Referrals are made to appropriate community agencies such as counseling.

Thanks to volunteer efforts and our Island’s industrial past we have a relatively large number of recreational facilities that we manage. These include the Texada Island Community Hall, the Gillies Bay tennis courts, Smithson Park and the Gillies Bay Ball Field and Farmers Market at Ericson Beach, the Van Anda Cove Property and the Old School Building leased by the Texada Library, the Sandpipers Nursery School and the OAPO.

Restorative Justice Program

Restorative justice is an innovative approach to conflict which brings victims, offenders and the community together in an effort to arrive at a resolution.   Its focus is on problem-solving and offender accountability. The RCMP has chosen to champion one specific process - Community Justice Forums (CJFs) Texada has a dedicated team of trained facilitators. If you are affected by an incident that you feel could be resolved by a Community Justice Forum report it to the local RCMP 604  486 7177.

The Texada branch of the Legion received its charter from Legion Dominion Command in 1949. It has operated continuously since then. Starting out in a converted brush pickers’ shed by
Van Anda Creek the Legion moved in 1961 to its present location built primarily by volunteer labour.  

Membership in the Legion is open to all Canadian citizens and landed immigrants over 19 years of age. Our regular annual dues are $40 payable by the end of December with a $5 deduction being given to those who pay by the end of November. Membership applications are available at the Legion Bar. Our membership is comprised of seniors, retired persons and other citizens interested in the quality of life of Texada’s aging population. As a formal group we have existed since 1979 as Branch #153 of the BC Old Age Pensioners Organization, but in November 2008, we decided to affiliate instead with a growing, vibrant province-wide Council of Senior Citizens Organizations (COSCO). Membership: open to any adult person 19 years of age or older who has residence in Canada.

The general mandate of TICS is to encourage the enhancement of youth and community, support the advancement of education and to assist the needy.

TICS publishes the monthly Express Lines (delivered free to every post office box on the Island), the periodic, Texada Lines, the bi-annual Telephone Directory and the Island’s brochure (contact Elayne Boloten).  

TICS hosts 11 monthly Bingos (1st Friday of each month, September through June, plus Sandcastle Weekend), an annual Holiday Potluck Gala, as well as other activities throughout the year, and offers 2 scholarships each year. TICS is also closely associated with the
Texada Island Food Bank and Christmas Hampers and Sandcastle Weekend.  

Meetings are held 4 times a year: the second Monday of March (AGM), May, September and November.

The United Church on Texada has been serving this community for over one hundred years. Marriages, funerals, Christenings, and baptisms are performed right here on the island. Christian education, both adult and for children and youth, has always been a part of our mission.

The first church on Texada Island was built and dedicated in June of 1900, and was named the Texada Presbyterian Church. With church union in 1925 the congregation voted to join the new United Church of Canada – a union of Congregationalist, Methodist, and Presbyterian Churches across Canada.  The name was then changed to Texada Island United Church.
